Thanks to everyone who sent super supportive emails on the new snail mail club! It's been so much fun, you can see the progress here! I also ecently received a lovely IG post from a student about SEO; the same day, Google announced a radical change in its strategy. Ironically, my Google traffic is growing despite doing nothing different, apart from optimizing the same way I did 4-5 years ago! And interestingly, my blog's revenue has picked up recently too- weird eh? Anyway, I'm seeing people are losing their minds over the recent news from Google : Chatbots are replacing Google searches, eliminating the need to click on blue links and tanking referrals to news sites! Is this the end of SEO and Google traffic?? My honest thoughts? No And even if I'm wrong, it's still not news that bothers me, and it shouldn't bother you either 4-5 years ago, when I was getting over 150,000 visitors a month from Google, I'd probably lose my shit, rip a bald patch out of my hair, and proclaim blogging is dead This is because the majority of my traffic came from Google, and income from programmatic ad revenue, like Mediavine But I got REALLY fed up with the constant algorithm shifts Then decided to follow best SEO practices with my articles, and crack on with more long-term sustainable traffic and income strategies to diversify and give me peace of mind. If you are currently at the ripping a bald patch out of your hair stage, here's why I think everyone should calm their tits: 1 - A LOT of people HATE AI chatbots and won't use them. Many don't even know how. The panic online is driven by tech Twitter and marketing bros, not your actual audience. Do you think my mum and aunts use AI chatbots? They can't even remember their Hotmail passwords (real story - I spent 5 hours trying to reset and regain entry into my mum's email account. We failed) 2 - The UK has just given media websites the legal power to block Google from using their articles in AI search. This is a big deal. Other countries are watching, and regulation is coming. AI search is nowhere near as settled as the doom-merchants would have you believe. I think this stuff takes time, and it's not as drastic as everyone thinks it will be (but what do I know eh?) 3 - People will still look for the blue links, so it will still exist despite what Google saysHave you tried using AI overviews? They suck I still click on traditional news sites and blogs, and I know many others do too. 4 - AI search still sends traffic.Even when AI Overviews appear, people click through for the full picture, to buy something, to book something, or because they don't trust a chatbot with their holiday/health/money. Again, this is me and everyone I know, all humans searching for real content online. 5 - If Google traffic disappears tomorrow, what's your plan?Email lists, Pinterest, YouTube, social, direct search... aren't backup options; they should be your WHOLE strategy They are what will save you from ripping your hair out. If you are on the Google traffic gravy train right now, you won't want to hear this, but I am going to say it anyway: The bloggers thriving right now built multiple traffic sources years ago. You can do the same. Feel the pain first, and build it, or you will be forced to build it with a bald patch form stress, like me. I was cruising and enjoying the easy SEO traffic and ad income until HCU came along, and I HAD to diversify It was to diversify or go back to a corporate job No thanks Can't face Rob the Rambler at the water cooler complaining about his debt and lack of dating options (another real story O_O Good morning! I'd say. he'd reply - we will see how good the morning will turn out. Total energy vampire he was, yuck) Anyway, with the fear of another conversation with Rob, I put my commitment phobe tendencies to good use, took my eggs out of Google's basket, and learned Pinterest traffic, email traffic, social media traffic, then affiliates, digital products, sponsorships, and workshops I learned it all little by little, and the ground under my blog felt more stable and stronger I don't freak out when I hear Google updates anymore I simply do not care, it doesn't affect me or my income anymore 6 - The content that wins in an AI world is the same content that always wonThis is genuinely useful, specific, experience-led stuff that a chatbot can't replicate. First-hand knowledge, real opinions, actual photos from the place you visited. That's our edge Speaking of content, there is a girl who uses copy-and-paste AI for ALL her IG captions, emails, and content, and she rants and raves about connection and authenticity She sounds like a robot, and it really puts me off her content. Sometimes when I see *another* generic heartfelt post, I can't help but roll my eyes Makes me think about my content and how I can do better. Just something for you to think about Look, I get the panic, it's another big change, and we hate change But the fix isn't to chase every new algorithm update; instead, you need to build something that doesn't collapse every time Google sneezes. If you want help doing exactly that, Elevate Your Emails is the place to start. I walk you through how to build sustainable traffic and income that doesn't live or die by whatever Google decides to do next. Recently, I talked about launching a new product, a physical product to be exact! And I spent hours trying to get everything perfect. I wanted everything to be ready and polished and professional before I was ready to launch I am not ready, it looks so amateur, I need to change x, y, and z But then I realized- I need to take the advice I give all of you again and again START UGLY, START SCARED AS LONG AS YOU JUST START So, the sales page isn't ready, nor is the payment link or much else, but...
It’s 3:02 am as I write this. And I can’t sleep. Not because something is wrong, but because I’m excited. Lord knows I NEED to sleep, because I have a rambunctious toddler that likes to stick her finger in electrical sockets O_O Plus, this online business to run tomorrow, but ... I just can't sleep! Exciting thoughts and ideas are whizzing through my head I’m starting a completely new business. A physical product business, which feels both exciting and slightly ridiculous, considering I...
A few years ago, there was a creator whose emails kept landing in my inbox, and I completely ignored them. He talked about solopreneurship, how to grow your income while staying small, without hiring a team. His whole thing is about trying not to scale too much, working, but not at the cost of freedom and flexibility. I'd occasionally open them every 2 months, but overall, I'd just delete them. I should have unsubscribed and saved us all time, but something about his emails... I dunno.......
